Hallway Plan Challenge

For my first hallway street sign I chose to use the shape of a sword because it symbolizes our Crusaders logo. I used the sword mainly for the Crusader Country sign for the gym.  The sword street sign could be used to point towards the direction of the hallway and symbolize part of the Crusaders logo at the same time.  I used the colours navy and golden yellow in the sign to represent our Crusader colours.  Since the sword street sign would be hard to symbolize the street names for Stairway to Heaven and some others, I also chose to make a simple sign using the same navy and golden yellow colours, but including the Crusader logo under the room numbers.  Both signs could be used in the creation of the street signs because they both include our school colours and representations of our school logo.

Pig Art

Pig Art 1

Pig Art 2

For my pig art, I decided to use Eric Johansson's technique to create my pictures.  I used two different backgrounds from the Internet to create two different moods for my pictures.  The sunny background was to set a happier and brighter mood, and the cloudy background sets a more calm mood. The picture I chose of the pig was originally flying in the air, but by turning him on his back it looked like he was being thrown up by the blanket. I took my own pictures in my backyard of my step sister and I throwing a blanket into the sky.  Out of my of the pictures I took, this one worked best because the wind caught part of the blanket making it look like something was there pushing it down.  Out of both pictures I like the first one better because it sets a better and happier mood then the second one, I think it would give more of a positive vibe towards the Ontario Pork Congress.

Poetry cover assignment

For my poetry cover I decided to create an overall picture that would work well and help explain the title of the poetry cover.  When I thought of the poetry title "My Thoughts, My Expresstions, My Poetry", I thought of thoughts, and fireworks and poetry.  In my picture I chose to show a picture of a book to represent the poetry that the students wrote, I chose fireworks to represent expressions, and clouds to represent thoughts.  I also added in some musical notes and a butterfly to look like they are coming out of the poetry book along with the fireworks to show ideas and expressions that are coming from the messages found in the poetry.

CD Cover

Original CD Cover

CD Cover 1

CD Cover 2

For my CD cover I decided to remake a cover for Taylor Swift's Fearless album.  The reason behind my cover was to match the theme of the album name.  I chose to show a girl jumping off a cliff fearlessly and freely because it clearly represents her album name.  Taylor Swift is also popular for the country music that she sings which I thought would be displayed well by a peaceful setting instead of a clustered city.  When I listen to most of Taylor Swift's music, it reminds me of summer and happiness which is also why the setting  of my cover displays someone jumping off a cliff in the summer time.  The CD cover with the faded out rainbow in the background is my favourite out of the two because it adds the most colour, and it also fits the overall picture better.  I think that a CD cover that explains the reason behind her album name "Fearless" would be a better representation than her original one where being "Fearless" isn't displayed.

Triptych

Triptych 1

To begin my Triptych, I began by taking random pictures outside.  I chose to take random pictures in the nature for my Triptych because I thought that they would be an interesting object with different textures.  For my first Triptych I changed the colour of my pictures completely to make them more interesting.  I chose the colour purple to be the main colour of all the pictures because it gave the overall picture a cool calm feeling.  It also gave all three pictures something in common which helped tie them together.  I liked using this technique for this picture because it made it look more interesting by highlighting different parts of the plants and objects with different shades of purple, and in some parts blue.

Triptych 2

For my second Triptych I decided to over express the colours in each picture.  I used the enhance modifier to brighten the colours in each picture which also helped tied the pictures together.  In this Triptych I used the rule of 1/3 to help evenly separate each picture

Multicultural assignment

For my Multicultural poster I decided to make its main focus point a peace symbol surrounded by hands of different cultures.  I thought it was a good way to represent the multicultural festival because without peace there is war,  So the peace symbol was a good symbol to bring the different cultures together.  My poster also expresses its message in a simple way.  I tried to keep the main information on my poster limited so that it wouldn't look over whelmed.  "One World Living Together" is also in a colourful font to show that it is the theme of the event/ poster. For the background I put a simple map of the world to add some colour, but not too much to make it the main focus of the overall picture.  I think my poster would be a good choice to represent the Multicultural Festival because overall it represents different culturals of people coming together in peace.

Photojournalism ethics

Part One:
In our society today I believe that there should be more of an ethical approach when coming to photojournalism.  Its understandable that journalists are trying to get there message across by showing detailed pictures, but there comes a point were there should be a limit on what you show.  Everyone in our world is human whether you make a mistake or not.  Celebrities are the main people that get criticized every day in the media.  Although they are looked up to by many people there comes a point when they should be left privacy.  When you see a picture in a magazine of celebrities partying and out of control, or crying over something that has upset them in their life, that's their life and their business that no one else should have to know about.  This also causes people to look down on the celebrities because they are put in a bad spot light.  What people don't realize is that everyone makes mistakes and everyone has emotions and the freedom to be who they want to be.  There should be more respect shown towards peoples everyday lives and situations.  I think that most people would agree that if they were put in the spot light for the world to see, that they would hate to see a criticizing photo, but would much rather prefer seeing a photo of them doing a good deed.  This is why I believe that there should an ethical approach towards photojournalism

Part Two:
PHOTO ONE

I chose this picture because it shows that the students are also interested in what the candidates have to say about their future.  As the students were asking questions, I took pictures because it shows that although most of us aren't of age to vote yet, the questions they ask and the answers they get from the candidates are still important because it's there future that is also being affected by their decisions.

PHOTO TWO

I chose this picture because it shows that John Lawson wants to make a positive connection with the students at our school.   In the chapel after the presentation John Lawson showed that he was interested in the questions that were asked by students.  He showed lots of respect by taking his time to explain what the Green Party was all about, and what he would do to help ensure that the future would change positively.

For my voting poster I decided to get the message accross for voting through a superhero logo.  Everyone is familiar with Superman, he has super powers and helps save the people around him who are in danger.  Since we live in a democratic governement and everyone has the right to vote, everyone should let themselves be heard.  Everyones vote makes a difference which means everyone has the power to make a difference in our country.

Digital Portrait

Digital Portrait

Digital Portrait (Plastic Wrap)

My goal was to take an original photo of my sister and create a new photo using expression and movement.  I wanted to make my photo unique by using different colours and textures to complement the movement.  To complete my goal I began with taking several pictures of my my little sister outside.  I downloaded the pictures of my sister onto my computer once I was finished and then saved them all under a new folder.  After, I opened up the picture I chose to use onto Photoshop and then copied and pasted it onto its own layer.  Since I wasn't exactly sure of what I wanted to do, I started experimenting with different colours and textures for my sisters hair and clothing.  After experimenting, I then decided that using enhance, then adjusting the lighting and also adjusting the colour curves it made my sister's hair look defined and stringy.  Once I was finished the adjustment to my sister, I took out  the background around my sisters hair using the magic wand tool, and then used the eraser tool to remove the rest.  When the background was gone, I made a new layer and used the paint bucket to make a plain black page to replace the old background.  Last I searched Google for musical notes.  When I found the notes that I wanted to use, I saved them and then went back to Photoshop to open them up.  I created a new layer for each set of notes.  Then I used the magic wand to remove the white from around the notes. For my third picture I added a plastic wrap over the final picture just to experiment once again.  I like the look that the plastic wrap gave because it added a glow to the background.  Overall I'm happy with the way both of my pictures turned out.  My goal was to make a picture using movement and I feel that I accomplished it by using the affect of her stringy defined hair with the musical notes.  I also like the colour of the notes up against the black background because it makes them stand out.

Black and White (Original)

Black and White (Newspaper)

For this assignment I decided to take pictures of my sister outside, because I thought that the light from the day sky would help with the lighting on her face.  I chose this picture because I like the fact that she has a gap and braces.  To make this photo more interesting I first converted it to black and white, and then on the same adjusting sheet I changed the contrast to newspaper with more contrast.  By doing this, the picture of my sister looks more defined and interesting.  Her hair is darker in this version then in the original black and white one.  I think that her dark hair brings out the colour of her pale skin and braces.  After changing the contrast, I then cropped the picture leaving part of my sisters face out.  I chose to crop it this way so that you would be more focused on her smile then her eyes.

Digital Landscape

The goal for my digital landscape was to alter photos using Photoshop to create an abstract using the city of New York.  I kept in mind digital landscaped photos that were created by Karin Kuhlmann because I liked the idea of creating an abstract photo.
To create my own digital landscape I began by looking on Google for pictures.  At first I wasn't sure what kind of landscape I wanted to create so I saved pictures of all kinds.  When I finished looking for pictures I decided to take my favourite ones and make them blend.  I Chose New York City, a picture of the moon and a beach sunset.  To make them one landscape I first opened the picture of New York City and pasted it on its own layer.  I used the Magic Wand to separate the buildings from its night sky.  Since I didn't remove all the night sky I used the eraser to remove the remaining from the tricky spots that the magic wand didn't pick up.  Once I was finished with New York City, I opened up the beach sunset and pasted it on a separate layer, then I erased the grassy beach, so I was left with the sunset.  When I put both, the sunset and the New York buildings together I realized that the pink part of the sunset wasn't as noticeable behind the buildings.  To fix the problem I used the Clone Stamp to put in more of the pink sky which made the sunset more visible behind the buildings.  For the picture of the moon, I opened it up and pasted it on its own layer.  Then I erased the sky from around it and moved it into the top left hand corner.  After that I decided to add some stars to the night sky using the eraser tool.  Randomly I put dots into the sunset background, and put larger stars closer to the moon.  Once I was finished my picture I changed up the colours of the sunset using the adjustion of the saturation and hue button.  I also changed the buildings by using filter and the plastic wrap.  I used these two final touches to add more detail and to make it unoriginal.  As you can see in the second picture from the top, without these adjustments, my picture was close to being the same as the original one.
Overall I was hoping that my photo would be more creative.  I'm glad that I changed the colour of the sunset and the effects of the buildings to make my picture look more creative.  Next time I hope to have more time to put together a digital landscape so that I can put more thought into it. I would also like to find more pictures to alter and distort to create the final image.
